She invites Frank to dinner, and he meets Aiden at their apartment, where they both live together. Frank thinks that he’s nice but also shy and quiet. Also, he gets to know that Aiden is from a rich and famous family.

While Frank was leaving the apartment, he used the restroom. He finds a little box within a bag taped inside of the toilet tank as he tries to fix the clogged toilet tank. He becomes suspicious but he knows that he can’t open it without like tampering too much. So, he leaves it there and then leaves the house so this is where he becomes skeptical of Aiden.

Frank meets his sister, Tammy, and informs her about Maggie’s wedding. Tammy is super excited and optimistic about it. But Frank seems very unassured about the wedding. Then, Frank gets this like random photo sent to him in the mail and it is a picture of a woman named Dawn Taggart and Aiden is also in the photo. So, Frank becomes more suspicious and tells Maggie about it. She asks him to bring that to her.

Maggie explains the backstory of this photo: Aiden went on one date a while back before her disappearance while hiking. But people are apparently blaming him for her disappearance, even though they only went on one date together. Also, Maggie says that Dawn’s mom is the one who is sending out this photo to harass other people, and there is nothing to worry about. She says that they got lawyers to have the situation under control.

Frank, Tammy and Abigail, Tammy’s foster child, drive to the wedding. On the way to the wedding, they meet a townsman named Brody. Brody finds out who they are, and he starts freaking out, saying that Aiden’s family is awful. He also says that they are the ones that killed his niece, Dawn. So, Frank is even more skeptical of the whole situation at this point.

But they reach a remote Lakefront estate where the marriage is about to happen. Every guest is given a separate cabin to stay for the wedding. Frank and Abigail switch their rooms as Abigail’s room is infested with a huge spider.

Frank decides to explore the property and he ends up listening to Aiden and his art school friend Gwen’s suspicious conversation. He finds out that Aidan’s mom is very ill and she is suffering from chronic migraines. So she is locked up on the top floor of one of the cabins. Frank becomes more suspicious and he enquires Aiden about the photo he received. Aiden denies his involvement in Dawn’s disappearance and says that Maggie is his alibi, as they were together on those dates.

Still suspicious, Frank sets out to find Aiden’s mother, Linda. But he goes to meet Dawn’s mother after finding Gwen dead while Maggie and Frank were canoeing. She was the one who gave cryptic information about the mysterious situations. Linda believes that Aiden is the one responsible for her daughter’s disappearance, as they saw each other for an entire summer. Also, she says that evidence was tampered with and destroyed.

Then, Frank heads back to the property, and he runs into one of Maggie’s friends from college. He learns that Maggie was associated with a cheating scandal. A few pages before, Maggie’s shopping scandal is said, indicating her bad nature.

During the rehearsal dinner, Frank goes to find Aidan’s mother. On speaking to her, he finds that she is not ill and she is day drunk. Also, Aidan’s mom explains the story about the disappearance of Dawn. She found her husband and Dawn were sleeping together. So, she killed her with a car battery. Aiden sees Frank and his mom talking about Dawn and tells Frank not to believe her.

But Frank keeps exploring the property and he finds Maggie sleeping with Aiden’s dad. Frank is very unsettled and explains everything, Tammy. But Tammy says that Maggie is an adult and she can act according to her wish. Since the situation is very chaotic, Maggie ends up explaining everything to Frank.

She says that this marriage is a coverup for the death of Dawn, and she is gaining a lot of money by helping cover this all up and sleeping with Aidan’s dad. Out of nowhere, Aiden dies by gunshot, and everybody freaks out. The wedding’s ruined, and the little girl Abigail ends up being the last one at the wedding.

After a few months, Tammy ends up adopting Abigail. While visiting Abigail, Frank finds about a poster that was placed in her suitcase during the wedding. The poster turns out to be the map of the property. The map was meant to go to Frank, but it ended up going to Abigail because they had switched cabins.

On the map, there is an x in the middle of the lake. Frank tells Maggie about it and they burn it. Now, Frank fears that Abigail is in danger as she saw the map. So, he plays a ploy demanding shares from Aiden’s company for Abigail’s safety.

But he goes to the bathroom and takes the mysterious bag from the toilet tank. He escapes the place among the chaotic situation. The mysterious bag contains recordings of the Aiden family’s incriminating information and evidence of their wrongdoings recorded by Maggie. Frank calls her friend Vicky and tells her to contact her son who is a journalist.

After seven months, Dawn’s body was found in the x mark in the lake at the estate. Now, Maggie is put behind bars. At the end of the book, Frank goes to visit her on her birthday. But he couldn’t visit her as he is not on her visit list.
